What is the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC)?
- The NHTRC is a national, toll-free hotline, available to answer calls from anywhere in the country, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.
- We are not government, law enforcement, or immigration.
- We receive calls from a wide range of callers including, but not limited to: potential trafficking victims, community members, law enforcement, service providers, hospitals, churches, businesses, and others.
What is the need for the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC)? Currently, in the anti-trafficking field in the United States, the NHTRC fills a unique role as the single 24-hour national hotline specifically dedicated to the issue of human trafficking. While other national hotlines do exist that are operated by other government agencies, these hotlines are either not available on a 24-hour, 7-day a week basis, or they are not specific to the issue of human trafficking. In addition, many state and local hotlines also exist in the field, but their geographic scope of service is generally targeted towards a single state or local area. The NHTRC complements and works with all of these existing actors by serving as a connector and a 24-hour outlet that serves the entire United States.
By offering a single memorable number, the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline provides a shortcut for professionals, victims, and community members who need to access information and services quickly. Furthermore, due to the exclusive focus on human trafficking, the NHTRC also operates as a national clearinghouse for questions, resources, information, training materials and best practices for those already working in the field and those who wish to get more involved.
Operation of the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) Polaris Project, a non-profit, non-governmental organization working to combat human trafficking and modern-day slavery began operation of the NHTRC on December 7, 2007. The hotline itself has been in operation since 2004. The NHTRC is currently run out of Polaris Project’s national headquarters office in Washington, D.C.
